Jasmine Woodruff scored the game-winning golden goal on a penalty kick in overtime to give the Newman women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Friends University on Friday (Sept. 12) at Wilkins Field. The Lady Jets moved to 2-1-1 on the season, and the Falcons dropped to 2-2.
Woodruff knocked in the penalty kick in the 99th minute after she was taken down in the box and the FU defender was given a yellow card. Woodruff chipped the PK by the Falcon goalkeeper to get the win.
After a scoreless first half, Friends scored first on a shot in the right side of the box in the 68th minute.
Harriet Jakeman tied the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 73rd minute as she dribbled into the box and fired a shot that went left of the goalkeeper and in. The score remained tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation.
In the scoreless first half, NU dominated play, totaling seven shot to only one from FU. The Lady Jets had seven corner kicks to zero in the first half. The second half was closer with NU holding a 7-5 shot advantage. For the game, NU tallied 16 shots to six from the Falcons.
Kayleigh Renfro started in goal, making four saves and allowing the one goal. She moved to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Lady Jets continue a three-match home stretch with Washburn on Wednesday (Sept. 17) at 7 p.m. at Wilkins Field.
