LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman women's volleyball team went down in straight sets, 3-0, at Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Sept. 13) at Rip Griffin Center. The Lady Jets dropped to 3-5 and 1-3 in the Heartland Conference, while LCU moved to 5-0 and 4-0 in conference play.
LCU won the three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21. In the first set, LCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead, however, the set remained close through much of the early stages. With the score tied at 16-16, the Lady Chaps scored four consecutive points to take a 20-16 lead. The Lady Jets scored the next two points, but LCU got to set point at 24-20. The Lady Chaps finished the set with a kill for the 25-20 score.
In the second set, it was all LCU as they led the whole way in the 25-21 win. Again, the Lady Chaps scored the first three points and pulled out to a 15-10 advantage. NU never challenged LCU in the set as the Lady Chaps went on to win 25-21.
The third set saw the Lady Jets pull out to a 10-6 lead early, but LCU came back to knot the score at 11-11. The score was still close at 18-17 in favor of the Lady Chaps, but NU couldn't regain the lead, getting as close as 21-20. LCU scored the next three points and after kill from
Alexis Roecker, the Lady Chaps won the set, 25-21, and match after a NU error.
Jarin Braithwait and
Ashley Gonzalez led NU with eight kills. Braithwait hit a match-high .438.
Lexi Kuharich tallied 29 assists, and
Anna Burton dug up a match-high 15 balls.
LCU hit .242 compared to .160 for NU.
The Lady Jets return home for a match against Bethel College on Monday (Sept. 15) at 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. Live video and stats will be provided.
