WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team pulled out to a 4-1 lead and held on for a 4-3 victory over rival Friends University on Monday (Sept. 15) at Wilkins Field. Four different Jets scored in the win. The Jets moved to 4-0-1 on the season.
Friends' Lucas Coelho, who finished with a hat-trick, put the Falcons on top early with a goal off a free kick from 20 yards in the fourth minute.
The lead did not last long as
Lucas Hanson scored in the sixth minute on a header on a cross from
Kerbson Lubin for a 1-1 score. The Jets scored four straight goals to build a 4-1 advantage.
Taylor Henry gave NU its first lead, 2-1, with a goal in the 22nd minute with
John Senseman getting the assist. The lead grew to 3-1 with a
Luca Anelli tally on a shot from the top of the box in the 28th minute. The Jets led 3-1 at halftime.
In the score half, NU went up 4-1 on a
Gefte Blanc goal in the 61st minute. He dribbled down the left wing and fired home a shot that found the back of the net.
The Falcons made it interesting as Coelho scored consecutive goals in the 84th and 87th minute. His first goal was a shot from 25 yards and his third goal of the game came on a free kick from 20 yards.
NU held a 12-8 advantage in shots for the game, including an 8-2 edge in the first half.
The Jets host Midwestern State on Friday (Sept. 19) at 7 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats will be provided.
