WICHITA –
Maricela Ruvalcaba scored the match-winning golden goal 14 seconds into the second overtime to propel the Newman women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Southwestern College on Monday (Sept. 8) at Wilkins Field. The Lady Jets got their first win of the season and improved to 1-0-1.
Ruvalcaba received a pass from
Daniela Nieto at the top center of the box and fired the ball by the Southwestern goalkeeper in the 101st minute to lift NU to the victory. It was Ruvalcaba's first goal of the season, and Nieto's first assist.
After a scoreless first half, NU took a 1-0 advantage on a goal in the 58th minute from
Aisling Kerr. She knocked in an impressive shot from about 25 yards to the top left corner of the goal.
The Moundbuilders scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute on a goal from SC's Nichole Resa right over the top of NU's goalkeeper
Kayleigh Renfro.
NU dominated statistically with 19 shots to five from SC.
Renfro picked up the win in goal, making four saves and allowing the one goal in 100:14 minutes of action. She is 1-0-1 on the season.
The Lady Jets travel to East Central on Wednesday (Sept. 10) for a 5 p.m. match in Ada, Okla.
