WICHITA – The Newman women's basketball team upset Lubbock Christian by the score of 52-46 on Thursday (Jan. 8) at Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets moved to 4-9 and 1-4 in the Heartland Conference. LCU, which went undefeated in the Heartland Conference in 2013-14, dropped to 8-5 and 2-1 in conference.
 
With the Lady Chaps up by two at 38-36 with 8:49 remaining, Kesha Buckner hit a 3-pointer at the 7:20 mark for a 39-38 NU advantage. Buckner put the Jets up by three with a layup with 4:34 left for a 41-38 score.
 
After the Lady Chaps cut the deficit to one point at 41-40, Brianna Caldwell knocked down back-to-back triples to put NU up by the score of 47-41 with 2:27 remaining. The margin would be enough, as the Jets hit their free throws down the stretch for the 52-46 win.
 
NU forced LCU into 23 turnovers, and the Jets totaled 13 steals.
 
The Jets led for 33 minutes and 10 seconds of the game with their largest lead being six points.
 
DeKendra Ledoux scored a game-high 20 points and added four rebounds. Kesha Buckner added 11 points and eight steals.
 
The Jets shot 33.9 percent (12-33) from the field and 22.2 percent (6-27) from 3-point distance. NU went 8-of-14 from the free throw line for 57.1 percent. The Jets totaled 14 assists on their 19 made baskets.
 
The Lady Chaps shot 42.2 percent (19-45), and 21.4 percent (3-14) from 3. LCU struggled from the free throw line, going 5-of-17 for 29.4 percent.
 
Allison Szabo totaled a team-high 11 points for LCU, and Blair Taylor tallied 10 points.
 
The Jets are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 10) at Fugate Gymnasium against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
