Volleyball’s Win Streak Hits 11 with 3-0 Win Over StMU

WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team increased its winning streak to 11-straight matches with a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's on Thursday (Oct. 1) at Fugate Gymnasium. With the win, the Jets moved to 13-4 on the season and 5-1 in the Heartland Conference, ranking No. 2 in the standings.
 
The Jets won the first set, 25-22. The set was the closest of the match as NU was victorious by scores of 25-20 and 25-11 in the next two sets for the 3-0 win.
 
For the match, NU hit .299 with 48 kills and only 13 errors on 117 attempts. The Jets finished with 6.0 blocks. NU improved its hitting each set. In the first, the Jets hit .196. After the first, NU hit better than .300 in the final two sets. In the second set, the Jets finished at .343, and in the third, they were even better with a .389 hitting percentage and 17 kills and only three errors.
 
StMU finished hitting .079. The Rattlers totaled 29 kills and 20 errors on 114 attempts. Channing Hankins totaled a team-high seven kills. Maddy Walsh had 23 assists, and Tori Estrada finished with a match-high 23 digs.
 
Ashley Gonzalez totaled a match-high 15 kills with a .414 hitting percentage. She added three aces. Gaylynn Jones tallied 11 kills with zero errors for a .379 hitting percent. She got a double-double as she finished with 10 digs to go with the 11 kills. Emily Harvey added 10 kills and hit 318. Alexus Litts finished with 39 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. Libero Anna Burton had a team-high 18 digs with two aces.  
 
The Jets look to make the winning streak 12 straight on Saturday (Oct. 3) at 12 p.m. against Texas A&M International. Live stats and video are available for the contest.
