WICHITA – The Newman volleyball team won its 12th straight match with a 3-1 win over Texas A&M International on Saturday (Oct. 3) at Fugate Gymnasium. With the win, the Jets moved to 14-4 and 6-1 in the Heartland Conference.
It was a slow start for the Jets as they dropped the first set, 25-23. After the first set, NU recovered to have its best performance with a 25-15 victory in the second set. In the third, NU continued to roll, getting a 25-21 victory. The Jets clinched the match with a 25-21 win.
The Jets hit .308 with 18 kills in the first set, however, NU struggled with serving, totaling six service errors in the set. The mistakes allowed the Dustdevils to get the set win. They hit .250 with 11 kills and only four errors.
In the second set, it was all NU. The Jets hit .345 with 12 kills and only three errors. TAMIU totaled a match-low seven kills and six errors for a .037 hitting percentage.
NU scored the final four points in the third set to gain a 25-21 win. After a Jet timeout at 21-21,
Emily Harvey got a kill to put NU up 22-21. An attack error from TAMIU made it 23-21.
Kayla Turner and Yemimia Buana picked up a block to put the Jets at match point. And Harvey produced again with a kill for the 25-21 win.
The Jets controlled the final set the whole way, getting the 25-21 win and the 3-1 victory in the match. NU hit .125 with 11 kills and seven errors in the final set. The Dustdevils finished with 12 kills and six errors to hit .182.
For the match, NU hit .212 with 55 kills and 26 errors on 137 attempts. The Jets finished with a 7.0 total team blocks. TAMIU totaled a .130 hitting percent with 40 kills and 24 errors on 123 attempts.
Ashley Gonzalez finished with a match-high 20 kills and a .405 hitting percentage. She added three blocks and three aces.
Emily Harvey added 12 kills and hit .222.
Alexus Litts totaled a match-high 49 assists.
Anna Burton tallied a match-high 17 digs.
The Jets travel to Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday (Oct. 8) at 5 p.m. in Goodwell, Okla.
