WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team scored two early second half goals to get a 3-2 win over Texas-Permian Basin on Senior Day on Saturday (Oct. 17) at Wilkins Field. With the win, NU moved to 8-5-1 and 3-1 in the Heartland Conference.
After falling behind 2-1 at halftime, the Jets tallied two goals in the first 5 minutes of the second half. Sophomore defender
Jamie Barkway tied the score at 2-2 with a header to the back post off a corner kick from senior
Victor Rojas in the 49th minute.
Senior
Pedro Augusto scored the game-winning goal as he went by a defender and hit a shot to the lower left corner for the 3-2 score in the 50th minute.
UTPB went up 1-0 in the first half on a goal from Cesar Cid in the 40th minute.
Augusto knotted the score at 1-1 in the first half with his first of two goals. He hit a shot to the lower right from the top of the box in the 44th minute.
Gefte Blanc got the assist on the goal.
The Falcons went up 2-1 in the 45
th minute when Rafael Moreira hit a shot from 25 yards to the left side after a NU giveaway.
NU held a 22-10 edge in shots, including 12-6 in shots on goal. In the second half, the Jets totaled 13 shots to five from UTPB.
The Jets finished the 2015 home schedule with a 6-3 record.
NU ends the season with four straight road contests. The Jets go to St. Mary's on Thursday (Oct. 22) at 5 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
