AUSTIN, Texas – Strong play from the Newman volleyball team's middle hitters lifted the Jets to a dominating 3-0 win at St. Edward's on Thursday (Oct. 29) in Heartland Conference play. With the win, NU moved to 21-6 and 10-2 in the Heartland Conference.
The Jets rolled to set wins of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-20.
Senior middle hitter
Ashley Gonzalez finished with a match-best 16 kills and a .467 hitting percentage. She added five blocks. Freshman middle hitter
Yemima Buana hit .333 for the match and added eight kills. She also finished with three blocks.
In the first set, NU had its best hitting performance with 20 kills and only five errors for a .319 hitting percentage. SEU also hit well with a .216 hitting percentage, its best performance of the match.
The Jets continued its strong hitting in the second with a .225 hitting percentage. They totaled 14 kills and only five errors. The Hilltoppers were at their worst hitting at .067 with 11 kills and eight errors.
NU had their worst hitting numbers in the third; however, they still hit .213 with 16 kills. SEU tallied 12 kills and six errors on 47 attempts for a .128 hitting percentage.
For the match, NU hit .254 with 50 kills and 16 errors on 134 attempts. The Hilltoppers totaled a .132 hitting percentage with 32 kills and 15 errors on 129 attempts.
The Jet defense tallied 75 digs to only 56 from SEU. Sophomore Libero
Anna Burton totaled a match-high 25 digs. She also had three assists.
Senior setter
Alexus Litts finished with a double-double of 41 assists and 12 digs. Litts totaled four blocks.
Gaylynn Jones had 15 digs with six kills.
Kayla Turner registered eight kills and 11 digs.
The Jets continue its road trip at Dallas Baptist on Saturday (Oct. 31) at 12 p.m. in Dallas.
