WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team scored three first half goals to pull away for a 3-1 win over Eastern New Mexico on Sunday (Oct. 4) at Wilkins Field in the final nonconference contest this season. With the victory, the Jets won their third straight and moved to 5-4-1 on the season.
Victor Rojas put the Jets up 1-0 in the 17th minute. Rojas bended in his corner kick by the ENMU defense for the 1-0 advantage. About 8 minutes later,
Luca Anelli scored his fourth goal of the season for a 2-0 edge. He went by his defender on the left wing and beat the goalkeeper to the bottom right side.
Richard Wincer got the assist on the goal.
A pass from
Taylor Henry set up the final goal scored by
Pedro Augusto. In the 38th minute, Augusto knocked in a shot from towards the top of the box for the 3-0 NU lead.
The Greyhounds got their only score of the contest in the 40th minute. Roberto Zatarain put in his own rebound for the 3-1 score.
The Jets were up 3-1 after the first 45 minutes. In the first period, NU held a slight 9-8 edge in shots with six shots on goal.
The second half was scoreless for both teams. ENMU tallied six shots to only three from NU.
For the game, the Greyhounds totaled 14 shots to 12 for NU. However, eight of the 12 Jet shots were on goal. Seven shots for ENMU were on target. Augusto registered six shots with four shots on goal.
Calum Dillon finished with six saves in 90 minutes in goal.
NU starts conference play on Thursday (Oct. 8) against Dallas Baptist at 5 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats and video will be available for the contest.
