WICHITA – The Newman men's soccer team started the Heartland Conference schedule with a 1-0 win over Dallas Baptist on Thursday (Oct. 8) at Wilkins Field. The Jets moved their winning streak to four straight with the victory, going to 6-4-1 overall.
NU got the game-winning goal on an own goal. On a corner kick, a Dallas Baptist defender knocked the ball into the goal for the 1-0 Newman edge in the 70th minute.
The Jets had their scoring opportunities. NU finished with seven shots on goal and totaled 13 shots. DBU tallied eight shots and two on goal.
In the second half, NU controlled play with nine shots to five from the Patriots.
Calum Dillon got the shutout win, going the full 90 minutes in goal. He made two superb saves to keep the clean sheet. Dillon moved to 6-4-1 on the season, including two shutout wins.
The Heartland Conference win was the first conference-opening victory for the Jets since a 1-0 win over St. Mary's on Sept. 16, 2011 at Wilkins Field.
