WICHITA – For the second straight season, the Newman men's soccer team finishes second in the Heartland Conference.
Pedro Augusto scored a late goal to give the Jets a 3-2 win at Oklahoma Christian on Sunday (Nov. 1) at Eagle Soccer Field. With the victory, NU moved to second in the standings with a 5-3 record in the conference and 10-7-1 overall. The Jets will be the No. 2 seed in the Heartland Conference Tournament in Austin, Texas on Thursday (Nov. 5) and Saturday (Nov. 7).
Augusto, a senior from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, scored the game-winning tally in the 81st minute, knocking in a shot from the edge of the box for a 3-2 advantage.
It was the third time NU held a lead in the contest. Sophomore
Jamie Barkway put the Jets up 1-0 in the 15th minute on a header off a rebound.
The Eagles knotted the score at 1-1 in the 24th minute.
NU gained its second lead of the game in the 39th minute. Junior
Luca Anelli scored his team-best eighth goal of the season to put the Jets up 2-1.
After the first half, the Jets held a 2-1 advantage.
The host Eagles again tied the score at 2-2 with a goal in the 55th minute. OC scored on a shot from 25 yards to top left corner.
For the contest, OC held a 24-14 edge in shots; however, NU totaled nine shots on goal to only five from OC.
Calum Dillon got the win in goal, making three saves and allowing two goals in 90 minutes.
NU finishes the regular season at 10-7-1. The Jets take on Texas A&M International on Thursday (Nov. 5) at 11 a.m. in Austin, Texas. Live stats and video will be available.
