OKLAHOMA CITY – The Newman men's basketball team moved to 2-0 with an 89-79 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday (Nov. 14) in the Heartland-Lone Star Challenge, hosted by Oklahoma Christian at the Eagles' Nest. The Jets moved to 2-0 with two wins over Lone Star Conference opponents, two key wins for regional rankings.
The Jets held a 43-39 advantage after the first 20 minutes. In the second half, NU outscored Texas A&M-Commerce by a 46-40 margin for the 89-79 score.
All five starters were in double figures. Junior
Jarvis Williams led the Jets with 22 points and five assists in 36 minutes. He shot 8-of-13 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point distance. He also had three rebounds and one steal. Senior
Jalen Love poured in 19 points, going 8-of-10 from the free throw line. He was 4-of-9 from the field, hitting three 3s. Senior
James Pegues was limited to only 14 minutes due to foul trouble, but still scored 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. He added five rebounds.
Cortrael Colbert went for 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He also had three assists and two steals. Senior
Gavin Thurman totaled 10 points and five rebounds in 34 minutes. Thurman went 5-of-15 from the field.
NU finished 45.6 percent (31-68) from the field. The Jets were 10-of-33 from 3 for 30.3 percent. The Jets committed only nine turnovers and forced Commerce into 23 turnovers.
Texas A&M-Commerce shot 47.2 percent (25-53) from the field and 7-of-18 from 3 (38.9 percent). Ronnie White scored a team-high 18 points and got five rebounds. Bryant Crowder missed a double-double by one with 10 points and nine rebounds.
