ST. LOUIS – In his first action of the season, junior
Dustin Reed won the championship of the 125 lb. elite class at the Maryville Kaufman/Brand Open on Saturday (Nov. 14).
Heath Gray placed second in the 174 lb. amateur class, and
Colton Duhr was fifth in the 157 lb. elite bracket.
Reed, a junior from Colby, Kan., knocked off No. 4-ranked Joshua Kieffer of Indianapolis in the championship match by a sudden victory (3-1). He defeated Nicholas Brennan of Missouri in the semifinals by a close 3-2 decision. Reed's day started with a win over Jaret Singh of Maryville. For the day, Reed went 3-0.
Gray, a freshman from Chandler, Okla., placed second in the 174 lb. amateur class. In the championship match, Gray lost by a 6-3 decision to Jacobe Smith of Northeast Oklahoma. Before the loss, Gray won four straight matches. He started with a 9-5 win over Austin Robbins of Indianapolis. In his next match, Gray won by a 17-4 major decision over Evan Richards of Central Missouri. Gray got a pin at 4:44 to beat Colin Brennan of Northeast Oklahoma. The freshman won by a 12-7 decision over John Hughes of Baker in the semifinals. For the day, Gray went 4-1 and placed for the second time in two weeks.
Duhr, a senior from Andale, Kan., placed fifth in the 157 lb. elite class. After a first round loss by a close 3-1 decision to Ryan Strope of McKendree, Duhr won three straight on the backside of the bracket. He won by pin at 6:59 over Shay Lauderdale of Missouri Baptist and then got back-to-back decision victories. He won by an 8-1 decision over Jonathan Stewart of Williams Baptist. Duhr then won 3-1 over Bradley Little of Fort Hays State. In the third place match, Duhr lost a 6-2 decision to Sawyer Smith of Ouachita Baptist. Duhr finished in fifth with a win over Joey Dozier of FHSU.
The Jets are back in action on Nov. 21 at the UNK Holiday Inn Open in Kearney, Neb. The event starts at 9 a.m.
