Hays, Kan. – The Newman men's basketball team suffers their first loss tonight against nonconference opponent Fort Hays State. This loss moves the Jets to 3-1 on the season and the Tigers to 4-0.
For the most part of the first half it was back and forth with runs on both sides. Once Newman took a 37-36 lead with 6:02 to go in the first half, it was the Tigers from there on. The Tigers went on a 19-2 run to close out the first half, leading 55-39 at the break. In the second half the Jets couldn't get the differential to single digits, the closest they got was 55-45 with 18:10 remaining in the second half. The scoring was even in the second half 37-37, with the Tigers taking the game with 92-76.
Senior forward
James Pegues was once again the leading scorer for the Jets with a game-high 21 points. He went 6-of-8 from the field, 2-of-4 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 from the foul line. He was also the team leader in rebounds and assists with 5 total rebounds and 4 assists.
Junior guard
Jarvis Williams was in double digits in points with 12. He went 4-of-10 from the field and 3-of-3 from the foul line. He grabbed 4 rebounds for the Jets and had 2 assists on the night as well. Senior guard
Jalen Love had 11 points on the night for the Jets, going 2-of-10 from the field and 6-of-6 from the foul line.
Junior guard
Taylor Schieber provided some quality minutes off the bench, by scoring 14 points for the Jets. He was 4-of-6 from the field, while shooting 4-of-5 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.
The Jets as a team went 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the field, while shooting 8-of-23 (34.8%) from three. They shot very well from the free throw line going 22-of-26 (84.6%) from the charity stripe. Newman grabbed 25 total rebounds. They had 12 assists on the night but turned the ball over 19 times as a team.
The Tigers shot very well as a team, going 34-of-55 (61.8%) from the field. They were also hot from three, going 9-of-16 (56.3%). They grabbed a total of 30 rebounds. They had 23 assists on the night and turned the ball over 16 times as a team. Dom Samac was the team leader in points and rebounds with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Rob Davis was second in scoring for the Tigers with 15 points.
Newman is back in action this Saturday (Nov. 28) at 3 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets will be hosting Rockhurst University. There will be live stats and video for the game.
