WICHITA, Kan. — Taking the court at Fugate Gymnasium for a final time in nonconference play this season, the Newman women's basketball team hosts Central Christian in a 7 p.m. tipoff Thursday evening.
The Jets (4-2) jumped back into the win column with a 69-45 dispatching of Bethany College Monday night. That game saw junior Mali Wright record her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Kesha Buckner fill up the stat sheet with six points, five assists, four blocks, two steals and two rebounds.
Senior Shaunice Robinson leads Newman with 13.7 points per game, and also puts up 2.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.5 steals. She went for a team-high 13 points Monday, and added five steals. Wright is tops on the team with 8.0 rpg, with the game against Bethany the third time in six games she's put up 10 boards.
Junior Brianna Caldwell is third with 9.8 ppg, and provided a pair of double-digit scoring efforts earlier this season. Buckner adds 6.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 2.3 apg, and leads the team with six blocks on the season. The Jets put up 62.2 points per game and have netted at least 69 in four of their six games. They've also sank 80 percent of their free throws on the season, averaging 16.7 freebies a game.
The Tigers (2-7) topped Manhattan Christian Tuesday night to pick up their second win of the season. The 89-56 victory saw four players score in double figures, led by Abbie Banks' 16 on 6-of-12 shooting. Caitlyn Campa and Molly Young each netted 12 points, while Heather Crittenden picked up 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Crittenden leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.8 ppg and 7.1 rpg.
