HAYS, Kan. — Freshman Heath Gray reached the semifinals, junior Noel Torres made it to the quarterfinals and two other Newman wrestlers picked up victories at the Bob Smith Open Sunday at Fort Hays State.
Gray earned a first-period pin over Missouri Valley's Blade Weber and an 8-1 decision over Baker's Nick Moore in his first two bouts of the day, and moved through the 174-pound quarterfinals by injury default before running into Western State's Austin Harris, the top-ranked grappler in the class in the Super Region 4 rankings. Gray dropped a 7-2 decision in the semis, and fell to Ouachita Baptist's Payne Hatter in the consolation semifinal to finish in the top six.
Torres grabbed decisions of 7-0 over Central Oklahoma's Joshua Jacobson and 16-11 over Colorado's Joseph Prieto to move into the quarters at 165. Western State's Travis Bradford stopped him there with a close 4-2 decision, but Torres bounced back with a 15-5 major of Fort Hays' Kregg Clarke in his first consolation bout before falling to Colby Community College's Gavin Grater 4-1 in the consolation quarterfinals.
Freshmen Joseph Padron and Garrett Whitson each bounced back from first-round defeats to move through two rounds of consolations. Padron pinned Northwest Kansas Tech in 1:16 and Neosho County's Ryan Sherry in 2:31 to move through the wrestlebacks before bowing out by injury default, and Whitson earned a fall of his own over Adams State's Joel Rico in consolations.
