WICHITA – The Newman baseball team went 1-1 in its home opener on Friday (Feb. 20) against Wayne State College at McCarthy Field. NU took game one, 8-0, but fell, 4-1, in game two. The Jets moved to 4-4 on the season.
Newman 8, Wayne State 0
The Jets plated eight runs in the first three innings to pull away for the 8-0 victory in the first game. NU started with two runs in the first inning.
Andrew Standish hit a sac fly to bring in
Jarrod Flax for the 1-0 score. With the bases loaded,
Aaron Mack walked for the 2-0 advantage.
NU added five runs in the second inning.
Tyler Bugner hit an RBI double to left center to plate
Ben Wagner to start the scoring in the second. A passed ball allowed
Tyler Evans to make it 3-0. Bugner then scored on an error from WSC's centerfielder.
Garett Thomas brought home Standish with a single to left field.
Daniel Jahnke singled through the infield to score Thomas for the 7-0 score.
One more run scored in the third inning on a sac fly from Evans. Wagner came home to score for the 8-0 NU advantage.
Sophomore
Lucas Schauer pitched the complete 7.0 innings, allowing only four hits with five strikeouts. He moved to 2-1 on the season.
Wayne State 4, Newman 1
The Wildcats pitching held the Jets to only two hits and one run in the nightcap. WSC's Matt Schulz started and pitched 7.0 innings with only two hits allowed. He totaled two strikeouts. Ryan Sweck and Curtis Bussard held NU hitless in the final 2 innings.
WSC scored two runs in the second inning. A wild pitch made it 1-0, and sac bunt with a runner on third scored the second run for the 2-0 Wildcat edge. WSC added two more runs on sac flies in the fifth and seventh innings.
The Jets got their only run of the game in the eighth inning. Thomas scored on a Jahnke groundout to second base.
Tanner Lee started game two, going 3.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
The two teams play another doubleheader tomorrow (Feb. 21) at 12 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
