Aggies Use Late Run to Down Lady Jets

GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma Panhandle State ended the game on a 27-2 run to erase a nine-point deficit and pull away for a 65-49 win over the Newman women's basketball team on Thursday (Feb. 5) night. The Jets dropped to 7-13 and 4-8 in the Heartland Conference.
 
After trailing by five at halftime, 33-28, the Jets started the second half on a 16-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 44-33 with 13:57 remaining. Kesha Buckner hit back-to-back layups to start the half, and a Mali Wright layup put NU up by one at 34-33 with 18:31 remaining. Wright scored her second consecutive basket for a 36-33 score.
 
Two Shakira Raynor free throws made it 38-33 with just under 15 minutes remaining. Brianna Caldwell then got hot from 3, hitting back-to-back treys for a 44-33 score with 13:57 remaining.
 
OPSU finally scored in the second half with one free throw at the 13:34 mark for a 44-34 score. After trading layups, the Aggies trailed by eight at 46-38. One free throw from Raynor with 10:27 remaining put the Jets up, 47-38.
 
After the Raynor free throw, it was all Aggies. They scored five straight points to cut the deficit to four at 47-43. A Buckner layup with 7:56 remaining would be the Jets final points of the game and it put NU up by six at 49-43.
 
Four OPSU free throws and a layup allowed the Aggies to tie the score at 49-49 with 5 minutes remaining. The Aggies took a two-point edge with 4:13 left on a Sade Tutson layup. OPSU hit 10 free throws and two more layups for the final 14 points to pull away for the 65-49 win.
 
Caldwell scored a team-high 15 points, going 5-of-12 from 3. She added a team-high eight rebounds. Buckner hit double figures with 10 points.
 
The Jets shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field, and 33.3 percent (7-21) from 3. NU only took 12 free throws and made half of them for 50 percent (6-12).
 
OPSU went 19-of-57 from the field for 33.3 percent. The Aggies shot 38 free throws, going 24-of-38 from the line (63.2 percent). OPSU held an 18 point advantage in points from the free throw line. The Aggies also only committed 10 turnovers to 20 turnovers from NU.
 
Tatyana Bell scored a game-high 21 points for OPSU. Kiera Waters totaled 12 points and nine rebounds. Tutson finished with 11 points, and Hannah Tatum added 10 points.
 
The Jets look to get back on track on Saturday (Feb. 7) at Lubbock Christian in Lubbock, Texas. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
