GOODWELL, Okla. – The Newman baseball team went 1-1 on its opening day of the season. The Jets defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State, 9-2, in game two, but started the day with a 4-3 loss to Colorado Mines. NU is 1-1 on the season after the first day of the season.

In the season opener, the Jets fell behind 4-1 and couldn't make it up in the ninth inning, falling one run short after scoring two in the final frame. Freshman
Aaron Mack got his first collegiate hit in the ninth, hitting a ball through the right side to score two Jets, Garett Thomas and
Andrew Standish. The two runs made it 4-3.
NU got on the scoreboard first in the first inning with a
Tyler Bugner infield single then a throwing error by the CSM shortstop allowed
Tyler Evans to score. The Jets led by one after the first inning.
Mines plated the next four runs to build a 4-1 advantage. A double in the third inning scored the first run for a 1-1 tie. In the fifth, CSM scored two more runs, both coming on a NU error. The Orediggers went up 4-1 with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
CSM's Nate Olinger got the win on the mound. He went 6 innings, allowing three hits and one run. Olinger totaled five strikeouts. Brett Kovach got a 3 inning save, allowing three hits, two runs with four strikeouts.
Making his first NU start,
Lucas Schauer went 7 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits. He stuck out five.
Joe Cannady pitched the final 2 innings and totaled two strikeouts while not allowing a hit.
Lead-off hitter
Jarrod Flax went 2-for-3. Bugner, Standish,
Alex Lator, Thomas,
Ben Wagner and Mack all totaled hits. NU held a 9-5 advantage in hits in the game.
Newman 9, OPSU 2
The Jets put up three runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-2 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State. Bugner tripled to right center and Evans came home for a 1-0 NU edge. Standish made it two consecutive triples and scored Bugner. The lead became 3-0 on a Lator sac fly to bring in Standish.
NU added three more runs in the third inning. Standish started the scoring with a single that plated
Nick Middleton. Thomas doubled to right field to bring in two runs, Standish and Bugner. The lead was 6-0 after three innings.
Thomas hit the first homer of the season, knocking one out to right field in the fifth inning. The two-run shot made it 8-0. Flax singled to bring in the ninth run. Wagner scored on the Flax single.
Starting pitcher
Cody Fredericksen was dominant. The Aggies went down in order in the first three innings. Frederickson didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning when the Aggies hit a double double the line, scoring their first run. Fredericksen responded with two strikeouts to end the inning.
The second OPSU run came in the eighth inning. The Aggies got in a rundown, allowing the OPSU baserunner from third to score. The Jets got the out on the play after the run scored.
Fredericksen got the win. His line finished at 5 innings, one hit, one run (unearned) and five strikeouts. Freshman
Lane Ramsey pitched 3 innings, allowing four hits and one run. He struck out four Aggies.
Ryan Jenkins finished the game, getting two strikeouts in 1 inning.
Thomas went 2-for-5 with four RBI. Standish finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Also with two hits were Middleton at 2-for-4 and Bugner at 2-for-4 with one RBI. The Jets totaled 12 hits.
The Jets finish their weekend with one game tomorrow (Feb. 8) against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 2 p.m.
