WICHITA – The Newman baseball team split with Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday (March 13) in a doubleheader at McCarthy Field. NU won game one, 5-2, but then allowed five runs in the ninth to go down, 8-6, in the nightcap. The Jets moved to 7-10 and 1-4 in the Heartland Conference.
Newman 5, Oklahoma Panhandle State 2
Lucas Schauer shutdown OPSU in the opener, pitching a complete game 7 innings and allowing two runs on five hits. He finished with seven strikeouts. The sophomore from Wichita moved to 3-2 with the victory.
After one Aggie run in the fourth, NU tied the score with an
Aaron Mack single through the infield to score
Garett Thomas for a 1-1 tie. OPSU plated one more run in the fifth on a sac fly. The Jets responded with three runs in the fifth to gain a 4-2 advantage.
Tyler Bugner knotted the score at 2-2 with a sac fly to plate
Jarrod Flax. Thomas doubled to center to bring in
Andrew Standish for a 3-2 NU edge.
Alex Lator made it 4-2 with a double down the line to score Thomas.
NU added one more run in the sixth inning on a double to right by Bugner to bring in
Tyler Evans for a 5-2 score.
Bugner went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Thomas was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Eight of the nine Jets totaled hits in the game.
Oklahoma Panhandle State 8, Newman 6
The Aggies scored five runs in the ninth inning to get an 8-6 win in game two. The Jets held a 5-3 lead going into the ninth inning.
With the bases loaded in the ninth, OPSU's Lucas Ogaz singled to center field to tie the score at 5-5 with two Aggie base runners scoring. With the bases loaded again, the Aggies singled to center again for two more runs and a 7-5 edge. A wild pitch allowed one more run to score for an 8-5 score.
Needing three runs in the bottom of the ninth, NU got only one. Thomas hit a sac fly to left to score Bugner from third. The Jets had runners at first and second with only one out, but a strikeout and pop out ended the game.
NU pulled out to an early 3-0 advantage, scoring runs in the third and fourth innings. Bugner doubled to left center to plate
Lucas Norton for a 1-0 lead. A double down the line by Standish scored Bugner to put NU up 2-0. After the two runs in the third, the Jets plated one in the fourth on a Norton single to bring home Mack.
OPSU tied the score at 3-3 with three runs in the fifth inning. A single to center scored one run, and a single through the infield allowed two more runs to score for a 3-3 score.
The Jets regained the lead in the sixth inning on a
Daniel Jahnke double down the line to score Mack for a 4-3 edge. NU made it 5-3 with an infield single by Flax with the bases loaded. Lator scored on the RBI single.
Dylan Porter started the game, going 7 innings and allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Skyler Barnes and
Lane Ramsey combined to pitch the eighth inning.
Joe Cannady started the ninth, but allowed four of the five runs on three hits.
Bugner went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Flax was also 2-for-4 with one RBI. Stanfish went 2-for-5 with one RBI, and Lator was 2-for-5.
The three-game series ends tomorrow (March 13) with one game at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Field. Live stats will be available.
