WICHITA – The Newman baseball team picked up a Heartland Conference series win by defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State by a 14-4 run rule final after eight innings. NU won two out of three in the series, and the Jets moved to 8-10 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.
NU scored runs in seven of the eight innings, including multiple runs in four different innings. The Jets poured it on in the eighth inning, scoring four runs.
In the eighth,
Jarrod Flax started the scoring with an RBI ground out to score
Alex Lator.
Tyler Evans singled to right field to score two more runs as
Daniel Jahnke and
Aaron Mack scored. The game ended with a
Tyler Bugner double to center field to score Evans for a 14-4 win.
The Jets started with one run in the first inning on a sac fly from
Andrew Standish for an early 1-0 lead after one inning.
In the third, OPSU tied the score at 1-1; however, NU plated two runs in the bottom of the third to go back up by a 3-1 score. Standish singled to score Bugner, and then Lator doubled to left to bring in Standish.
In the fourth and fifth innings, NU scored one run in each inning. With runners on second and third, a balk allowed
Lucas Norton to score for a 4-1 NU advantage.
With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Norton got an RBI after he was hit by a pitch.
Garett Thomas came home to score for a 5-1 score.
The Aggies plated two runs in the sixth inning. A triple down the line scored one run, and another run came home on a single through the infield. The Jets lead was cut to 5-3.
NU added three more runs in the sixth inning. Thomas doubled to right center with a hard hit ball that rolled to the wall. Standish scored on the RBI double.
Mack, a freshman catcher, hit his first career home run, going deep to right field. The two-run shot made it 8-3.
After one run from OPSU in the seventh, the Jets scored two more runs for a 10-4 advantage. Evans hit an RBI single to plate Norton for a 9-4 score. Bugner singled to score Evans for the 10-4 edge.
Bugner, a sophomore from Andale, Kan., went 4-for-6 with two RBI. Mack went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Evans went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Eight of the nine Jets in the lineup finished with hits, as NU totaled 15 hits.
Senior
Cody Fredericksen started on the mound, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits. He had five strikeouts.
David Herrera and
Lane Ramsey combined to pitch 2.1 innings. They allowed only one run and totaled five hits.
The Jets travel to William Jewell on Tuesday (March 17) for one game at 2 p.m. in Liberty, Mo.
