WICHITA – The Newman baseball team upset nationally-ranked Washburn, 6-1, on Wednesday (March 18) at McCarthy Field. The Jets moved to 9-11 on the season, and the Ichabods, ranked No. 19/21, dropped to 16-3.
Chase Wilson, in his first start of the season, went 6 innings, holding a strong WU lineup to only 5 hits and one earned run. He totaled three strikeouts and moved to 1-0 on the season.
Skyler Barnes went the final 3 innings, picking up the save, and got three strikeouts with no hits.
NU plated the first five runs of the game to pull out to a 5-0 advantage after three innings. The Jets started fast, totaling three runs in the first inning.
Andrew Standish started the scoring in the first with a single up the middle to score

Garett Thomas groundout made it 2-0 as
Tyler Bugner scored.
Alex Lator increased the edge to 3-0 with a single to right field, and Standish came home for the 3-0 score.
In the third, NU added two more runs. With runners at second and third, Bugner scored again on a wild pitch. Standish scored for a 5-0 advantage on an
Aaron Mack single through the left side of the infield.
Wilson's shutout ended in the seventh inning. With a runner at second after a lead-off double, a single allowed the runner to score for a 5-1 score. Barnes came in to get three straight outs to end the seventh.
The Jets finished their scoring with one more run in the eighth inning.
Jarrod Flax singled to right center to score pinch runner

In the ninth inning, the Ichabods loaded the bases, but a great play from the shortstop Flax turned two for a double play. He caught a liner and flipped the ball to second in time to get two. A groundout to Flax ended the game with the Jets winning 6-1.
Mack, a freshman catcher from Madison, Wis., went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Bugner was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Five different Jets totaled RBI. NU finished with eight hits.
The Jets return to Heartland Conference action this weekend at Texas-Permian Basin. The series has been shifted to Saturday and Sunday (March 21-22). The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. on Saturday with one more game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
