ODESSA, Texas – The Newman baseball team started a three-game series with Texas-Permian in impressive fashion by sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday (March 22) at McCanlies Field. NU won game one, 10-8, and then got a 10-9 victory in game two. With the wins, the Jets moved to .500 in the conference and overall at 11-11 and 4-4 in the Heartland Conference.
Newman 10, UTPB 8
NU used an eight-run fourth inning to pull away for a 10-8 win in the first game. The Jets started the scoring in the game with an RBI single by
Tyler Bugner in the first inning for a 1-0 NU edge. The Falcons tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning on a single.
In the fourth inning, the Jets poured on the runs, scoring eight runs to take a commanding 9-1 advantage. With the bases loaded, back-to-back wild pitches allowed NU to score two runs for a 3-1 score. Bugner singled again to plate two more runs.
Tyler Evans and
Jarrod Flax scored on the RBI single from Bugner.
Alex Lator singled through the infield to make it 6-1, and
Aaron Mack singled to left field to bring in two more runs for the 8-1 edge.
Garett Thomas and
Andrew Standish scored on the Mack RBI single. An error by UTPB allowed the final run of the inning to score for a 9-1 NU advantage.
The Jets totaled eight runs on seven hits with one error in the fourth inning alone.
UTPB tried to rally with runs score in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Falcons totaled seven runs in those final three innings. Three runs scored in the fifth on a two-RBI double to right center, and then another double to left field made it 9-4. After another NU run in the top of the sixth on a Thomas RBI double, the Falcons plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a single through the infield and a triple for a 10-6 NU lead. A double to left in the seventh scored the final two runs in the 10-8 game.
Lucas Schauer moved to 4-2 on the season as he started game one. The sophomore went 6 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Joe Cannady went the final inning and allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
NU finished with 13 hits. Bugner went 3-of-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Thomas was 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Standish went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks. Lead-off hitter Flax was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Newman 10, UTPB 9
In the nightcap, NU rallied from an 8-4 deficit to win by the final score of 10-9.
The Jets started by building an early 4-1 lead in the third inning. NU trailed by one after a RBI ground out in the first inning by the Falcons. The Jets responded in the third inning with four runs to go up 4-1.
Lucas Norton doubled to center field to score
Ben Wagner to tie the score at 1-1.
Tyler Evans put the Jets up 3-1 with a two-RBI single through the infield. The lead grew to 4-1 on an
Andrew Standish infield single. Evans scored on the Standish RBI single.
In the fourth, the Falcons pulled to within one run with a grand slam home run, all four runs were unearned. UTPB added three more runs in the sixth to gain an 8-4 edge. A bunt single scored one run, and two more runs scored on a single to center field.
The Jets knotted the score at 8-8 in the seventh inning with four runs. The scoring started with Norton coming home on a wild pitch after a Bugner walk. Evans scored on a Standish single through the left side for an 8-6 score.
Alex Lator tied the game at 8-8 with a two-RBI double to right field to plate both Standish and Bugner.
NU took the lead in the ninth inning with two runs.
Daniel Jahnke hit a sac fly to center to allow Thomas to tag up from third base for a 9-8 NU edge. The lead grew to two runs on a Norton single up the middle to bring home Lator for a 10-8 score.
The Falcons got one run in the ninth inning; however, it was not enough as the Jets hung on for the 10-9 win.
Appearing in relief,
Lane Ramsey got the win on the mound, pitching the final 3.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Dylan Porter started and went 5 innings and allowed only one earned run on eight hits.
Four Jets finished with two hits. Evans, Standish and Norton all went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Flax was 2-for-6 with one run scored. NU finished with 10 hits and 10 runs.
The three-game series sends tomorrow (March 23) at 2 p.m. in Odessa, Texas.
