Baseball Allows Six Runs in Ninth to Go Down to OC

WICHITA – Oklahoma Christian scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Newman baseball team, 10-6, on Saturday (March 28) at McCarthy Field. The Eagles won the series, 2-1. With the loss, NU dropped to 13-14 on the season and 5-7 in the Heartland Conference.
 
Heading into the ninth inning, the Jets held a 6-4 advantage. An error allowed one OC run to score, and the Eagles tied the score at 6-6 with a single to left. The game-winning runs scored on a grand slam homer to right field.
 
The Jets gained a 2-0 advantage in the third inning after Andrew Standish RBI infield single for one run, and then a sac bunt from Garett Thomas allowed Tyler Bugner to come home for the 2-0 NU edge.
 
OC erased the deficit and pulled out to a 4-2 lead with four runs in the fifth inning. A double scored one run and the score tied at 2-2 on a single to left center. An error by the Jets brought in two more OC runs to allow the Eagles to go up 4-2.
 
NU regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth with three runs. Brian Canfield scored after a fielding error from OC, and the Jets knotted the score at 4-4 on a Standish double to left field. Bugner scored on the RBI double. Alex Lator put the Jets up, 5-4, with a single to right field. Standish came in to score on the RBI single.
 
Aaron Mack added one more run for the Jets on a double to the wall. Thomas scored, but Mack was thrown out at third.
 
Bugner finished 3-for-5 today, and Standish was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Also with two hits was Mack at 2-for-4 with one RBI.
 
Cody Fredericksen got the start and went the first 8 innings. Lane Ramsey came in to pitch the final inning and allowed five runs, none of them earned.
 
The Jets play their next nine games on the road, starting with a trip to Washburn on Tuesday (March 31) at 5 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
