Early Run Not Enough As Jets Fall, 11-1, at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Newman baseball team scored the first run of the game, but couldn't add anymore, falling 11-1 at Washburn on Tuesday (March 31) at Falley Field. The Jets drop to 13-15 on the season.

Batting in the two spot, Tyler Bugner got things started for the Jets in the first inning with a single up the middle. He moved into scoring position after a stolen base. Andrew Standish brought Bugner home with a single to center field to put NU in front, 1-0.

The Ichabods responded with four runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the first inning. A groundout plated the tying run, and then a double down the line made it 2-1 in favor of WU. Another double plated two more runs for the 4-1 score.

Washburn added two runs in the sixth inning. Another double down the line scored the first run and a wild pitch made it 6-1.

In the eighth inning, the Ichabods poured on five runs to end the game via run rule. With the bases loaded a hit by pitch upped the lead to 7-1. A grand slam homer to right field gave Washburn the 11-1 win.

Bugner finished at 3-for-4 with one run scored, and Standish went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Jarrod Flax recorded the only other Jet hit as he went 1-for-4.

Tanner Lee started on the mound, going 5.1 innings and allowing only two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

The Jets return to Heartland Conference play on Thursday (April 2) with a doubleheader at St. Mary's. The twinbill in San Antonio, Texas starts at 1 p.m.
