SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Newman baseball team dropped two games of a doubleheader at No. 13 St. Mary's on Thursday (April 2) at Dickson Stadium. With the two losses, NU drops to 13-17 on the season.
St. Mary's 11, Newman 2
The Rattlers jumped on the Jets early, scoring five runs in the first inning and didn't let up in an 11-2 win in game one.
With the bases loaded, a double down the line plated three runs for an early 3-0 edge in the first inning. An error allowed the fourth run to score and a single up the middle made it 5-0 after the first inning.
In the second inning, the Jets got on the board with a sac fly from
Brian Canfield to score
Alex Lator from third for a 5-1 score. In the bottom half of the inning, StMU added two more runs on an infield single and a single to right field. A triple in the third inning from the Rattlers made it 8-1.
Lator hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for an 8-2 score.
The Rattlers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-RBI single up the middle. The final run of the game scored in the fifth inning on another RBI single for the 11-2 score.
NU totaled five hits. Lator went 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Evans,
Tyler Bugner,
Andrew Standish and
Garett Thomas also finished with one hit.
St. Mary's 5, Newman 1
In the second game, StMU totaled runs in three of the first four innings to pull away for the 5-1 win. An error in the first inning allowed the first Rattler run to score for the 1-0 edge. They added the second run in the second in a single up the middle. In the fourth, a solo homer made it 3-0 StMU.
A sac fly to center field in the sixth inning put the Rattlers in front, 4-0.
The Jets scored their only run in the seventh inning on a sac fly by
Daniel Jahnke. Thomas scored on the play for the 4-1 score.
StMU added their final run in the seventh inning on a sac fly for the 5-1 advantage.
Evans went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

Lucas Norton and
Aaron Mack all tallied hits in the game.
Lane Ramsey started game two and went 5.1 innings with six hits and four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts.
Kevin Luman and
David Herrera pitched in relief.
