SAN ANTONIO, Texas – In the series finale, the Newman baseball team lost, 3-2, to No. 13-ranked St. Mary's on Friday (April 3) at Dickson Stadium. With the loss, the Rattlers won all three games of the series, and NU drops to 13-18 and 5-10 in the Heartland Conference.
Cody Fredericksen had a strong start, going 6 innings and allowed only one earned run on six hits. He struck out six Rattlers.
Dylan Porter pitched 2 innings and allowed only two hits with one strikeout.
Jarrod Flax put the Jets up 1-0 in the first inning. After he reached on an error, Flax stole third and scored after the throw from the catcher was wild.
In the third inning, The Rattlers tied the score at 1-1 with a single to right field, scoring one run from third. StMU took a 2-1 advantage in the fourth inning on an RBI double down the line. The Rattler lead grew to 3-1 with a sac bunt and an error in the fifth.
The Jets tried to rally, plating one run in the sixth inning.
Lucas Norton doubled to right center to score
Brian Canfield for the 3-2 score. With Norton in scoring position, a pop up ended NU's chance to tie the game in the sixth. The Jets put runners on first in both the seventh and ninth inning, but couldn't advance the base runners.
Andrew Standish went 2-for-3, and Norton was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Aaron Mack and
Tyler Bugner both added hits.
NU travels to Northwestern Oklahoma State on April 7 for one nine-inning game in Alva, Okla. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
