LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman baseball team started the Heartland Conference season with two losses at Lubbock Christian on Friday (March 6) at Hays Field. NU dropped to 5-8 and 0-2 in the Heartland Conference. 
Lubbock Christian 14, Newman 3 
The Chaps pulled away late with eight runs in the sixth inning to win, 14-3, over NU. LCU scored three runs in the first, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. 
After falling behind 3-0, the Jets scored runs in the third and fourth inning. 
Tyler Evans grounded out with runners on second and third, scoring 
Ben Wagner for a 3-1 score in the third inning. In the fourth inning, 
Alex Lator singled to center field to score 
Andrew Standish to pull the Jets to within one at 3-2. 
LCU plated two runs in the fourth to gain a 5-2 edge. An infield single made it 4-2 and a single  through the infield upped the score to 5-2. 
Evans singled in the fifth inning to keep the Jets in the game at 5-3. Wagner scored for the second time in the contest. 
The Chaps scored one run in the fifth and then added eight runs in the sixth to pull away for the 14-3 win. 
Evans went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game. The Jets totaled seven hits. 
Lucas Schauer got the start, going 5.1 innings and allowing 11 hits and six earned runs. He totaled six strikeouts.

Joe Cannady pitched in relief. 
LCU's Brig Gerlich pitched the complete game. He allowed three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. 
Lubbock Christian 8 Newman 1 
In the nightcap, LCU scored seven runs in the first four innings to get an 8-1 victory. Three runs came in the second inning on a three-run home run by Gerardo Arzaga. The lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth inning on a single up the middle. Two more runs scored on a double down the line for a 7-0 Chaps advantage. 
Mitchell Beaudreau, playing in his first series of the season, singled to centerfield to score 
Garett Thomas for the only Jet run. The single came in the seventh inning. 
LCU added one more run in the seventh on a sac fly for the 8-1 score. 
Thomas went 2-for-3 with one run scored, and Evans was 2-for-4. NU totaled eight hits. 
Dylan Porter got the game two start, and he went 6 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs. Porter totaled four strikeouts. 
David Herrera pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits and one run with two strikeouts. 
The three-game series ends tomorrow (March 7) with one contest at 1 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available for the game.
