HAYS, Kan. – The Newman baseball team plated seven runs in the sixth inning to gain a 10-9 win over Fort Hays State on Wednesday (April 15) at Larks Park. The Jets moved to 16-20 and swept the season series with FHSU, 2-0.
After falling behind 5-2, the Jets scored seven runs to go up 9-5. After an error allowed one run to score, NU tied the game at 5-5 on a walk with the bases loaded.
Tyler Evans got the RBI on the walk. Another Tiger error allowed two runs to score for a 7-5 NU edge.
Garett Thomas doubled down the line to bring in two more runs. Standish and Evans scored on the play for a 9-5 lead in the sixth inning.
A double steal by FHSU scored one run for a 9-6 score in the seventh. The Jets plated their final run on a fielder's choice for a 10-6 advantage in the ninth inning. The Tigers got three late runs on a sac fly, a single up the middle and an error for the 10-9 final. With the bases loaded,
Kevin Luman shut the door on the Tigers, striking out the final Tiger batter.
FHSU put the first run on the board in the third inning. NU tied the score at 1-1 in the fourth on a
Daniel Jahnke single up the middle, and then the Tigers scored one more run for a 2-1 score. The Jets knotted the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning when Evans singled to right field.
Tanner Lee started and went 6 strong innings. He allowed only one earned run on four hits. Lee struck out six Tigers.
Kevin Luman came in to get the save.
Aaron Mack and
Lucas Norton both went 4-for-5 at the plate.
Jarrod Flax and
Tyler Bugner both had two hits.
The Jets return to Wichita to take on Texas A&M International this weekend. The series is currently set to start on Saturday at McCarthy Field.
