Jets Rally Twice to Get Doubleheader Sweep against TAMIU

AUGUSTA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team used two late rallies to win both games of a doubleheader against Texas A&M International on Saturday (April 18) at Augusta High School. Trailing 3-2 in game one, NU plated five runs in the sixth to get a 7-4 victory. In the second game, Aaron Mack was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the walk-off 3-2 win. With the two wins, the Jets moved to 18-20 on the season and 8-12 in the Heartland Conference.

Newman 7, TAMIU 4

The Jets scored five runs in the sixth inning of game one to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 advantage. The Dustdevils got one run in the seventh, but Lucas Schauer got forced a groundout to give the Jets the 7-4 win.

Schauer moved to 7-3 on the season, pitching the complete 7 innings. He allowed four runs, three early in the first two innings, on seven hits. After getting off to a slow start, Schauer pitched four straight shutout innings.

TAMIU went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, a single through the infield scored the two runs. In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Standish doubled down the line to score Tyler Bugner for a 2-1 score.

The Dustdevils added one more run in the second inning on a single to right field to plate one run for the 3-1 lead.

Alex Lator pulled the Jets to within one at 3-2 on a homer that went just fair down the left field line.

The five run sixth started with a Lucas Norton single through the left side to plate two runs for a 4-3 edge. Garett Thomas and Lator scored on the two-RBI single. Daniel Jahnke hit a single to center field to bring in Aaron Mack. A Jarrod Flax ground out added another run as Norton scored for a 6-3 advantage. The final NU run came on a Bugner double down the line to score Jahnke for the 7-3 score.

A ground out in the seventh inning scored the final Dustdevil run for the 7-4 final score.

Tyler Bugner went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Six Jets finished with hits. Andrew Standish was 1-for-4 with one RBI, Alex Lator went 1-for-2 with one RBI, Lucas Norton finished at 1-for-3 with two RBI, Daniel Jahnke was 1-for-3 with one RBI and Jarrod Flax was 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Newman 3, TAMIU 2

Trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Jets plated two runs to get the walk-off 3-2 victory.

With the bases loaded and the game tied at 2-2, Aaron Mack was hit by a pitch to score Standish for the 3-2 win. The game was tied at 2-2 when Lator was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded right before Mack. The rally came with two outs, starting with a Tyler Evans single up the middle. A single by Standish and then a TAMIU throwing error put runners at second and third. The bases were loaded when Thomas was intentionally walked. Then the back-to-back HBPs won the game for the Jets.

The Dustdevils went in front 2-0 early. With runners at the corners, one run scored on a double play for a 1-0 edge. An error in the fourth put TAMIU up 2-0.

Mack scored the first NU run of the game on an RBI single up the middle to score Lator for a 2-1 score.
