Baseball Sweeps Dustdevils, Scores Early to Get 14-2 Win

AUGUSTA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team scored nine runs in the first two innings to pull away for a 14-2 win over Texas A&M International on Sunday (April 19) at Augusta High School. With the win, the Jets swept the three-game Heartland Conference series with TAMIU and moved to 9-12 in the conference and 19-20 overall, winning their fourth straight game.
 
With runs at first and second after singles from Tyler Bugner and Andrew Standish, Garett Thomas singled to center field to score Bugner for a 1-0 NU lead. Alex Lator followed up the Thomas single with a double to left field to bring in Standish for a 2-0 advantage.
 
In the second inning, the Jets poured it on with seven runs. Bugner singled to left field to score both Brian Canfield and Jarrod Flax for a 4-0 lead. Standish plated Bugner on a sacrifice fly that was dropped by the Dustdevil centerfielder to allow Standish to reach base. Lator hit an infield single to score Standish for a 6-0 advantage. Another TAMIU error allowed Lator to score, and the final two runs in the inning came on a Canfield single to left center. The two-RBI single scored Lucas Norton and Aaron Mack for the 9-0 lead.
 
The Dustdevils scored one run in the third inning after a lead-off triple and then a sac fly in the next at bat plated the one run.
 
NU added five more runs in the sixth inning. The Jets started the inning with six straight hits. Standish and Thomas started with back-to-back singles to center. A double down the line by Lator scored Standish. A Mack single to center upped the lead to 11-1 as Thomas scored. Norton kept the offense going with a single through the infield to plate Lator. A double by pinch-hitter Criox Sedillo scored Mack for a 13-1 advantage. The final run scored on a Flax groundout to make it 14-1.
 
TAMIU scored their second run on a single to right field for the 14-2 score. The game ended after seven innings due to run rule.
 
Cody Fredericksen went the complete 7 innings. He struck out five and allowed eight hits with two runs. The senior moved to 3-3 on the season.
 
Standish went 3-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. Nine Jets got hits and RBIs in the game. Lator was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Bugner finished at 3-for-5 with two RBI. Thomas went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
