Hornets Snap Jets’ Four-Game Winning Streak

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Newman baseball team's four-game winning streak was snapped by Emporia State on Wednesday (April 22) when the Hornets defeated the Jets, 10-5, at Trusler. NU dropped to 19-21 on the season.
 
ESU pulled out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning. A single through the infield with the bases loaded plated one run. Another single through the infield added the other two runs for the 3-0 edge.
 
The Jets scored one run in the second inning on a RBI ground out by Brian Canfield. Alex Lator scored on the plate.
 
The Hornets singled to right field in the third inning to make it 4-1.
 
In the fifth inning, Tyler Bugner singled up the middle to plate Canfield for a 4-2 score, and Tyler Evans pulled the Jets to within one at 4-3 with a bunt single. Jarrod Flax scored on the RBU bunt.
 
ESU scored four straight runs to go up 8-3. A ground out in the fifth scored the first run. The Hornets added two more runs in the sixth inning on a single. Another ground out added a run for the 8-3 lead.
 
Croix Sedillo singled up the middle to bring home Garett Thomas in the eighth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, ESU added runs on a wild pitch and another ground out for a 10-4 score.
 
Andrew Standish doubled to right center in the top of the ninth to score Bugner for the 10-5 final score.
 
The Jets finished the game with 13 hits. Standish went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Bugner and Alex Lator were both 2-for-4, and Evans finished at 2-for-5 with one RBI. Eight different Jets totaled hits.
 
Tanner Lee started on the mound, going 5 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Kevin Luman, David Herrera and Corey Mondello came in to pitch as well.
 
NU travels to Rogers State this weekend for their final road trip. The three-game series starts on Friday (April 24) with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.
