CLAREMORE, Okla – The Newman baseball team split with Rogers State in a doubleheader on Friday (April 24) at the Hillcat Baseball Field. NU won game one, 4-2, and RSU got game two, 12-0. With the split, the Jets moved to 20-22 and 10-13 in the Heartland Conference. Game three of the series will be played tomorrow (April 25) at 1 p.m.
Newman 4, Rogers State 2
The Jets scored three runs in the seventh to get the 4-2 victory. With the score tied at 1-1 going into the seventh,
Croix Sedillo doubled dwon the line to score
Lucas Norton and
Aaron Mack. Mack and Norton both reached base on singles.
Jarrod Flax added one more run with a single to center field to make it 4-1 and to plate Sedillo.
The Hillcats got one run in the seventh on a double, but NU got the final out on a groundout for the 4-2 victory.
After RSU scored one run in the first inning on a single,
Tyler Bugner knotted the score at 1-1 with a RBI single to left field to score Norton.
Sophomore
Lucas Schauer went the complete game 7 innings and allowed only two runs on seven hits with one strikeout. The Wichita native moved to 8-3 on the season.
Norton went 2-for-2 at the plate, and Mack was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Bugner finished at 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Rogers State 12 Newman 0
The Hillcats pulled away for a 12-0 victory in the nightcap after only seven innings. RSU scored 10 runs in the final three innings.
The home team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single to left field. The advantage grew to 2-0 in the third on another single, this time to right center.
In the fourth inning, RSU started added three runs. First, the Hillcats hit a solo home run to left for the 3-0 lead, and then a two-run homer made it 5-0.
The fifth inning saw the Hillcats total two runs. The first run came on a sacrifice fly, and a double down the line upped the edge to 7-0.
Five runs in the sixth inning helped RSU end the game early due to run rule. A single to the gap in left scored two runs. A two-RBI double to center added two more runs for an 11-0 edge. The final run scored on a single up the middle for the final 12-0 score.
Daniel Jaahnke went 2-for-3, and Bugner was 2-for-4. Flax had one hit, but no other Jet finished with a hit.
RSU's Michael Fusselman went the complete 7 innings and allowed the five hits with six strikeouts.
The series finale will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Hillcat Baseball Field in Claremore, Okla.
