WICHITA –
Tyler Evans went 5-for-6 with three RBI to lead the Newman baseball team to a 14-7 win over William Jewell on Wednesday (April 29) in the final non-conference game of the season. NU scored nine runs in the seventh inning to erase a three-run deficit and pull away for the win. The Jets moved to 22-22 on the season.
Trailing 7-4 in the seventh inning, the Jets put up nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to go in front 13-7.
Andrew Standish tripled down the right field line to pull NU to within one at 7-6. The two-RBI triple plated
Tyler Bugner and Evans.
Garett Thomas tied the score at 7-7 with a single up the middle to bring home Standish.
Daniel Jahnke singled through the infield to give the Jets the 8-7 lead as Thomas scored. With the bases loaded, Flax worked a walk to increase the edge to 9-7. Evans upped the advantage to 11-7 on a two-RBI single. Standish hit a sac fly for the 12-7 score, and Thomas got another hit this time a ground-rule double to plate Evans for a 13-7 lead. The Jets added one more run in the eighth for the 14-7 final score.
NU put up three runs in the second inning. A wild pitch allowed the first run to score, and a sacrifice fly by Jahnke scored Thomas for the 2-0 edge. A wide throw by the William Jewell shortstop allowed
Lucas Norton to be safe and
Aaron Mack scored for the 3-0 NU advantage.
The Cardinals plated all seven of their runs in the third inning. A solo home run started the scoring, and then the Jets struggled to throw strikes, allowing back-to-back runs to score to tie the score at 3-3. A bases clearing double made it 6-3 in favor of WJC. The final run of the inning scored on a double down the line for the 7-3 Cardinal lead.
In the fourth inning, Evans pulled NU to within three runs with a single through the left side to score Mack.
The Jets finished the game with 19 hits. The top five hitters finished with 16 hits. Along with Evans going 5-for-6, Thomas finished at 4-for-5 with two RBI, and Standish went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Seven NU pitchers appeared in the game. They combined to allow only five hits.
Ryan Skoubo started and went the first 2.1 innings.
Kevin Luman came in to finish the third inning.

Corey Mondello pitched the final six innings and allowed only two hits between the five. Herrera picked up the win.
