WICHITA – Playing in their final doubleheader of the season, the Newman baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 10-ranked St. Edward's on Friday (May 1) at McCarthy Field. SEU won game one, 7-2, and then got a 15-4 victory in game two. The three-game series ends tomorrow (May 2) at 1 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
SEU 7, NU 2
The Jets took an early 2-0 lead on the Hilltoppers, but SEU scored seven runs in the final four innings to take game one.
Tyler Bugner put the Jets up 1-0 in the first inning on a fielder's choice to score
Jarrod Flax. The lead grew to 2-0 in the second inning on a Flax's single to left field to plate
Aaron Mack.
SEU knotted the score at 2-2 with two runs in the fourth inning. A double to left center scored the first run and then the score tied on an infield single that added another run.
Three runs in the sixth inning put the Hilltoppers up 5-2. A two-run homer to left field gave SEU a 4-2 edge, and a single through the infield made it 5-2.
In the seventh inning, SEU added two more runs. Another homer upped the lead to 6-2. The final run scored on a double to right center.
NU totaled only three hits in the game. Flax went 1-for-2 with one RBI.
Tyler Evans and
Andrew Standish both went 1-for-3.
Lucas Schauer started and went 6 innings. He allowed five runs on 12 hits with six strikeouts.
Craig Hamil pitched the final inning.
SEU's Collin Sherrod went the complete 7 innings. He allowed three hits and two runs with three strikeouts.
SEU 15, NU 4
SEU scored the first 10 runs in game two and won in eight innings, 15-4. NU got all four of the runs on home runs.
After three runs in the first two innings, the Hilltoppers pulled away with six runs in the fourth inning. The first two runs scored on walks with the bases loaded. A single to left field plated two more runs for a 7-0 advantage. Another single added two runs for the 9-0 lead after four innings. An infield single plated one run in the fifth inning to put the Hilltoppers up 10-0.
Aaron Mack hit the first home run of game two, going deep down the right field line. The towering homer scored
Alex Lator along with Mack for a 10-2 score.
SEU added two more runs in the sixth with a single to right center, and a double play with bases loaded plated the other run.
Andrew Standish hit the Jets second two-run homer of the game. His home run in the sixth inning was inside the left field foul pole to make it 12-4.
In the eighth three runs scored for SEU to end the game early after eight innings due to run rule.
Lucas Norton went 2-for-3, and Bugner was 2-for-4 with one run scored. NU totaled 10 hits.
SEU's Bryce Davis got the win, going 6 innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. Eric Hester went the final 2 innings and allowed only one hit.
Tanner Lee started for NU, going 3 innings.
