RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – With two wins on Saturday (Sept. 12), the Newman volleyball team went 4-0 at the Arkansas Tech Tournament during the weekend. The Jets defeated Midwestern State, 3-1, this morning and then won, 3-0, over Missouri Southern. NU moved to 6-4 on the season with the great weekend.
NU 3, MSU 1
NU started day two by defeating Midwestern State and former Newman head coach Natalie Rawson by a 3-1 score. After splitting the first two sets, the Jets won the next two, including a convincing 25-15 win in the fourth.
For the third time this weekend, NU started strong in the first set, winning 25-18. The Jets hit .257 with 14 kills and only five errors. MSU finished the set with a .105 hitting percentage and 11 kills and seven errors.
The Mustangs put together their best set in the second, hitting .293 with 15 kills and only three errors to pull away for a 25-19 win. The Jets cooled off to hit .130 with 14 kills and eight errors.
NU regrouped to win the next two sets. In a close third, the Jets got a close 25-22 win. For the set, NU hit .132 with 10 kills and five errors. MSU had 14 kills with nine errors and a .109 hitting percentage.
The Jets put the set away with a dominating 25-15 set four victory. Totaling only one error with 17 kills, NU hit .400. The Mustangs finished the set with 11 kills and six errors for a .114 hitting percentage.
For the match, NU hit .226 with 55 kills and 19 errors on 159 attempts. MSU totaled 51 kills and 25 errors for a .154 hitting percentage on 169 attempts.
Ashley Gonzalez tallied a match-high 21 kills.
Kayla Turner added 10 kills and a team-high 17 digs for a double-double. Libero
Anna Burton also had 17 digs.
Alexus Litts finished with a match-high 45 assists.
NU 3, MSSU 0
For the third time in four matches at the tournament, NU swept the opponent. In the final match, the Jets won, 3-0, over Missouri Southern.
The Jets cruised in the first two sets, winning 25-17 and 25-15. In the first set, NU totaled 16 kills with only four errors to hit .300 and have another great start. The second set saw the Jets hit .256 with 16 kills and six errors. MSSU hit only .028 and .094 in the first two sets.
The third set was close with the Jets winning 27-25. NU had match point at 24-22 after a
Jarin Braithwait kill; however, the Lions totaled back-to-back points to tie the score at 24-24. Again the Jets had match point after an
Alexis Roecker kill made it 25-24. A MSSU block knotted the score at 25-25. Roecker totaled another kill to put NU at match point, and an error from the Lions gave NU the set and match with the 27-25 win.
For the match, NU hit 197 with 47 kills and 21 errors on 132 attempts. MSSU finished with a .053 hitting percentage and 25 kills to 19 errors.
Gonzalez again had a match-high in kills with 16. Litts tallied 40 assists, a match high, and Burton totaled a match-high 23 digs.
The Jets travel to two Texas-Permian Basin on Thursday (Sept. 17) for a 7 p.m. match in Odessa, Texas. NU then goes to Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 12 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
