ODESSA, Texas – The Newman volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a 3-0 Heartland Conference victory over Texas-Permian Basin on Thursday (Sept. 17) at the Falcon Dome. With the win, the Jets moved to 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference. NU cruised to 25-21, 25-8 and 25-21 set wins.
 
In the first, NU scored a 25-21 win. The Jets finished with a set-high 18 kills and five errors on 50 attempts for a .260 hitting percentage. The Falcons had their best set performance of the match, totaling 13 kills and a .238 hitting percentage.
 
The second set was all NU as the Jets dominated in a 25-8 win. NU hit a set-best .444 with 10 kills on only 18 attempts. UTPB totaled just three kills with nine errors on 29 attempts. They hit a -.207, their lowest hitting percentage of the match.
 
In the final set, the Jets tallied 13 kills with seven errors, but still got the 25-21 set victory. For the set, NU hit .125. UTPB finished with only nine kills and eight errors for a .021 hitting percentage.
 
For the match, NU hit .233 with 41 kills on 116 attempts. The Jets finished with 14 errors. As for the Falcons, they totaled 25 kills with 20 errors for a .042 hitting percentage.
 
Senior middle hitter Ashley Gonzalez hit a match-high .407 with 14 kills and only three errors. Kayla Turner added a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs. Emily Harvey totaled 10 kills with a .346 hitting percentage. Senior Alexus Litts tallied 32 assists, a match high. She added eight digs. With a match-high 19 digs was sophomore libero Anna Burton.
 
UTPB's Puava Tulau had a team-high 10 kills. She added nine digs. Ariana Gallardo totaled 16 assists, and Marina Salazar finished with 11 digs, a team high.
 
The Jets go to Lubbock Christian on Saturday (Sept. 19) for a noon match in Lubbock, Texas.
