Jets Retain Highway 54 Cup on Fiszel’s Game-Winning Goal

WICHITA – Senior Dallas Fiszel scored the game-winning goal to lift the Newman men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Friends University as the Jets retained the Highway 54 Cup on Friday (Sept. 18) at Wilkins Field. It's the second straight season NU defeated the Falcons. With the win, the Jets moved to 2-2-1 on the season.

Fiszel, a senior from Wichita, got a through ball from senior Taylor Henry and went by the goalkeeper to put the Jets up 2-1 in the 81st minute. Henry got the assist.

The Jets went up 1-0 late in the first half on a Dominic Nwagwu goal, his third of the season. Tomaz Rossi sent in a corner kick that was headed by John Senseman and Nwagwu put in a back heel goal off the Senseman header for the 1-0 advantage with seconds left to go before halftime.

Nwagwu had a chance minutes earlier, but his shot on a wide open goal went just right. The Jets had their opportunities in the match. Justyn Taylor had an opening but fired a shot high.

Friends tied the score early in the second half. A turnover by the NU defense allowed Jamie Dowsett to put in a shot in front for the 1-1 tie in the 53rd minute.

For the contest, NU held an 11-9 advantage in shots with each team getting six shots on goal. With the Falcons playing a high line, the Jets were called for five offsides, all in the first half.

Nwagwu tallied four shots with two on goal, including the first half goal. Pedro Augusto and Dallas Fiszel each had two shots.

Calum Dillon went the full 90 minutes in goal, making five saves and allowing the one goal. He moved to 2-2-1 on the season.

The Jets travel to Midwestern State on Sunday (Sept. 20) for a 1 p.m. contest in Wichita Falls, Texas.
