WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Newman men's soccer team faced a tough task at No. 5 Midwestern State, falling 4-1, to the Mustangs on Sunday (Sept. 20) at the MSU Soccer Field. The Jets dropped to 2-3-1 on the season.
MSU went ahead 1-0 in the first half in the 35th minute on a goal from Flavio Guzman. At the end of the first half, the score was 1-0.
In the first period, both teams had chances to score with the Mustangs holding a slight 9-7 edge in shots.
The Mustangs scored two quick goals to start the second half to gain a 3-0 advantage. Less than 2 minutes into the second half, Leon Taylor tallied a goal from the top of the box and the lead grew to 3-0 with an Albert Rodriguez goal in the 49th minute. MSU added their final tally in the 74th minute with a goal from Garvin Samaroo.
The Jets got on the scoreboard in the 80th minute when
Victor Rojas scored from the top of the box for the 4-1 score. It's the first goal of the season for Rojas.
In the second half, MSU held an 8-5 lead in shots. The Mustangs tallied 17 shots in the game, including seven on goal. The Jets finished with 12 shots, including four on goal.
Pedro Augusto and
Gefte Blanc each totaled three shots and Blanc had one on goal.
Calum Dillon went the 90 minutes in goal, making three saves. He allowed the four goals.
NU returns home to play two straight at Wilkins Field. The Tigers of Fort Hays State come to Wichita on Friday (Sept. 25) for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Live stats and video will be available.
