WICHITA – The visiting No. 11 Fort Hays State Tigers scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to down the Newman men's soccer team, 2-1, on Friday (Sept. 25) at Wilkins Field. With the loss, the Jets dropped to 2-4-1 on the season, and the Tigers moved to 6-1.
The Tigers scored the game winner in the second minute of the second overtime. In very wet conditions, FHSU's Anthony Hernandez got a through ball on the right wing and hit the shot to the bottom left corner for the 2-1 win.
NU struck first in the contest.
Pedro Augusto beat the FHSU goalkeeper to the right side on a shot from the left in the box in the 23rd minute for a 1-0 NU advantage.
Victor Rojas set up the goal with the assist.
FHSU knotted the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute. Mauricio Castorino hit a free kick from the top of the box that went through the NU wall, giving NU goalkeeper
Calum Dillon no chance to make a save.
Both teams had their share of chances in the match. The Tigers hit one off the right post in the final minutes of regulation, and the Jets had a few shots go just wide as well.
In a closely matched contest, FHSU held a slight 14-13 edge in shots, however, the Jets held a 7-3 lead in shots on goal.
Calum Dillon went the whole match in goal, making one save and allowing the two goals. He dropped to 2-4-1 on the season.
The Jets return to the pitch on Monday (Sept. 28) to play Dallas Christian College at 7:30 p.m. at Wilkins Field. Live stats and video will be available.
