Volleyball Increases Win Streak to Nine

WICHITA – The Newman volleyball set an NU NCAA Division II era school record as the Jets increased its winning streak to nine straight with wins over Dallas Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday (Sept. 26) at Fugate Gymnasium. The 3-1 win over the Patriots put the Jets in second place alone in the Heartland Conference. With the two wins, NU moved to 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Heartland Conference.
 
NU 3, DBU 1
 
NU started with a 3-1 win over DBU at noon today. The Jets pulled out to a 2-0 advantage, and split the final two sets to come out with the victory.
 
In the first set, NU started with a 4-1 run and never trailed, getting a 25-20 victory. The Jets won despite being outhit by the Patriots. DBU totaled a .211 hitting percentage in the first set with 13 kills and five errors. NU hit .195 with 14 kills and six errors.
 
With the score tied at 15-15 in set two, the Jets went on a 5-1 spurt to gain control at 20-16. NU went on to win set two, 25-21. Senior setter Alexus Litts got the set-winning kill to put the set away. The Jets had their best hitting performance of the match, finishing at .367 with 15 kills and four errors on 30 attempts. DBU hit .184 with 12 kills and five errors.
 
The third set saw the visiting Patriots pull out a 25-21 victory. They put together their best set performance with 17 kills and five errors for a .300 hitting percentage. The Jets totaled a .238 hitting percentage with 15 kills and five errors.
 
The Jets put away the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set to get the 3-1 victory. NU built an early 5-2 edge. NU held a 23-17 advantage, but DBU made a run to get as close as 24-22. After a timeout from the Jets, Gaylynn Jones ended the match with a kill for the 25-22 victory. NU again hit better than .300 at .333 with 18 kills and six errors on 36 attempts. DBU totaled only 10 kills with a .188 hitting percentage.
 
Senior Ashley Gonzalez tallied a match-high 19 kills with a .289 hitting percentage. She added four blocks, two aces, three digs and one assist. Kayla Turner, Alexus Litts and Gaylynn Jones both finished with double-doubles. Turner had 13 kills and 12 digs; Jones finished with 10 kills and 12 digs. Litts ended with a match-high 46 assists and 10 digs. Emily Harvey added 12 digs with a .308 hitting percentage. Libero Anna Burton finished with a match-high 20 digs.
 
For the match, NU hit .275 with 62 kills and 21 errors on 149 attempts. DBU finished with a .223 hitting percentage with 52 kills and 19 errors on 148 attempts.
 
With the win, the Jets moved by the Patriots in the standings. NU went to 4-1 in the Heartland Conference, and DBU dropped to 3-2.
 
NU 3, NWOSU 0
 
The day concluded with a 3-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State. NU made quick work of the Rangers with wins by the scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20.
 
It was a slow start for both teams; however, the Jets pulled away for the 25-18 set one victory. The Jets only hit .162 in the set with 12 kills and six errors. The Rangers totaled a .128 hitting percentage with 12 kills and seven errors.
 
The Jets were near perfect in the second set, totaling only one hitting error. They finished with 13 kills and one error on 32 attempts, hitting .375. NWOSU hit .167 with 13 kills and six errors.
 
Although the Rangers hit .500 with only one error in the final set, the Jets managed to get the 25-20 win. NWOSU tallied 14 kills with one error on 26 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. The Jets totaled 13 kills with four errors on 29 attempts for a .310 hitting percentage. NU got three aces in the set, and was helped by four service errors from NWOSU. Four ball handling errors from the Ranger setters also helped NU get the victory.
 
For the match, the Jets hit .276 with 38 kills and 11 errors. The Rangers finished hitting .234 with 39 errors and 14 errors. NU was strong serving with eight aces to only one error. NWOSU had eight service errors and only one ace.
 
Harvey ended with a match-high 11 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Gonzalez added nine kills. Turner finished with seven kills and 10 digs. Litts again finished with a match-high in assists with 31. She tallied seven digs, two aces and one block. Burton dug up a match-high 15 balls.
 
The nine-match winning streak bested a seven-match streak from the 2013 season. The stretch includes wins over Ouachita Baptist, Arkansas Tech, Midwestern State, Missouri Southern, Texas-Permian Basin, Lubbock Christian, St. Edward's, Dallas Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma State.
 
The Jets look to continue the streak on Monday (Sept. 28) against Bethel College at 7 p.m. at Fugate Gymnasium. Live stats will be available.
