LIBERTY. Mo. – Newcomer Dominc Nwagwu scored two goals in his first Newman match to lift the NU men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over William Jewell on Thursday (Sept. 3) in the season opener for both teams. The Jets move to 1-0-0 on the season.
Senior
Taylor Henry opened the scoring in the match, hitting a shot from 15 yards out in the 30th minute to put the Jets up 1-0.
Gefte Blanc got the assist on the Henry goal.
WJC tied the score at 1-1 about 1 minute later on a penalty kick from Quinton Conyers. The score was tied at 1-1 after the first 45 minutes.
Dominic Nwagwu then scored the first two goals of the second half to put NU up 3-1. The first tally came in the 51st minute on a shot from five yards out. He doubled the Jet lead to 3-1 in the 65th minute.
Bernardo Vilas Boas got the assist on the goal.
Tristan Morgan of WJC pulled the home team to within one in the 79th minute, but the Jets were too strong and held on for the 3-2 victory.
NU totaled nine shots to 10 from WJC.
Vincent Couto and
Gefte Blanc each had two shots along with Nwagwu.
Calum Dillon got the start in goal, going the full 90 minutes. He made two saves and allowed the two goals. He moved to 1-0 on the season.
The Jets are back in action on Sunday (Sept. 6) against Colorado State-Pueblo on 12 p.m. at Wilkins Field on the campus of Newman University. Live stats and video will be available.
