WICHITA – The Newman women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with visitor Oklahoma Christian in the nonconference season opener for both team. The Jets move to 0-0-1 on the season.
The visiting Eagles went up 1-0 in the first half. OC knocked in a pass on a ball in from the left side. Rubi Villegas scored the goal for her first tally of the season with the assist to Sydni Wiles.
At the end of the first 45 minutes, OC held a 1-0 edge.
The Jets controlled play in the second half, holding a 6-2 advantage in shots. Junior forward
Morgan Foster knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 82nd minute as she put in a rebound on a shot from
Aliya Marshall, who got the assist.
After the 90 minutes of regulation, the score remained tied at 1-1.
In the first 10 minute overtime, NU got the only two shots, including a great opportunity by
Bianca Torres that went just wide left. In the second overtime, OC picked up the only shot.
For the match, NU held an 11-8 advantage in shots, including seven on goal. Foster totaled four of the shots with three from Torres. Coming off the bench, Marshall tallied two shots, both on goal.
Senior
Kayleigh Renfro started in goal, making two saves and allowing the one goal.
Kelsi Langley came in for the second half and totaled two assists in 65 minutes.
The Jets return to the pitch on Saturday (Sept. 5) night at 7 p.m. when they host Oklahoma Baptist at Wilkins Field. Live stats and video will be available for the contest.
