Clark Gets First Win with 3-1 Victory over Chadron State; NU Goes 1-1 Today

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Newman head volleyball coach picked up her first career collegiate win with a 3-1 victory over Chadron State today (Sept. 5) at the Angelo State Tournament. NU dominated the last two sets to pull away for the victory. In the Jets' final match of the tournament, they fell, 3-0, to host Angelo State. NU ended the tournament with a 1-3 record.

After splitting the first two sets, NU pulled away with huge set wins to give Coach Destiny Clark her first victory. The Jets started with a close 26-24 win in the first set, but then dropped set two, 25-20.
 
In the third set, NU hit .306 with 13 kills and only two errors to cruise to a 25-17 win. The Jets continued to hold momentum with a 25-13 victory in set four to get the 3-1 win. In the final set, the Jets hit .312 with 15 kills and five errors.
 
For the match, the Jets hit .182 with 56 kills and only 26 errors in 165 attempts. Almost half of those errors came in the second set as NU totaled 12 errors with 13 kills.
 
Senior middle hitter Ashley Gonzalez had a huge match, tallying a match-high 17 kills and .406 hitting percentage. Kayla Turner and Gaylynn Jones both had double-doubles. Jones went for 13 kills and 19 digs. Jones totaled 13 kills and 14 digs. Also with a double-double was Alexus Litts with a match-high 48 assists and 10 digs. Libero Anna Burton had a match-high 28 digs.

In the final match of the tournament, the Jets played host Angelo State and fell 3-0.
 
The first set was tight with ASU scoring two late points for a 26-24 win. The Belles had set point with a 24-20 edge, but the Jets battled back to knot the score at 24-24. An Ashley Gonzalez kill and Andrea Wheeler service ace put the Jets back in it. ASU ended the set with back-to-back kills to get the win.
 
In the second set, ASU pulled away for a 25-16 win. The Belles finished hitting .364 with only two errors and 14 kills. ASU hit even better in the third set, going off for a .395 hitting percentage with 19 kills and four errors. NU also had a strong hitting set, going for 14 kills with four errors for a .256 hitting percentage. ASU, however, got the set three win, 25-19, to take the match, 3-0.
 
Gonzalez had another great match, going for a match-high 16 kills. She hit .371, a team high. Gonzalez was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance this weekend. Turner added seven kills and 13 digs. Litts totaled 32 assists, and Burton tallied 18 digs.
 
As a team, the Jets hit .144 with 39 kills and 19 errors on 129 attempts.
 
ASU finished hitting .278 with 51 kills and 14 errors on 133 attempts. Mallory Blauser had 15 kills, and Brianna Sotello added 13 kills.
 
The Jets have their home opener on Tuesday (Sept. 8) against Bacone College at 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University.
