WICHITA, Kan. — Looking to get back to .500 in the early part of the Heartland Conference season, the Newman women's volleyball team rarely trailed to earn a 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-13) victory over Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.
KEY SEQUENCE
With the Jets (13-6, 2-2 Heartland) already up 2-0 in the match, the Patriots (3-13, 1-3 Heartland) started hot in the third as they looked to start a comeback. Instead, Newman rattled off nine consecutive points to jump out to a 10-3 advantage and cruise to the win. A kill from Hailey Braddy started the rally, and Yemima Buana, Emily Harvey and Braddy combined for two blocks around four DBU errors to get the juices flowing.
Set 1
-Kayla Turner chipped in two kills and teamed up for a block with Jarin Braithwait to stake the Jets out to a 7-2 lead, and a three-point spurt pushed that lead to 10-4.
-Alexis Roecker blasted home a pair of kills and Brook Conley picked up an ace to boost the advantage to 14-7 before the Patriots were able to get it back to within four over the next several points.
-Newman would take control once again though, going on a quick 4-1 run with kills by Braithwait, Roecker and Harvey to go up 22-15 and slide to the first-set victory
Set 2
-A four-point burst capped by a Turner kill pushed the Jets to a 7-3 lead early in the second, and a 6-1 run boosted them to a 13-7 advantage as Braithwait put up a block, a kill and an ace during the stretch.
-DBU charged back within one point at 15-14, and took a 22-21 lead, but a kill from Harvey and an Aliya Higginbotham ace pushed the Jets back in front.
-After a Patriot point, an error and a Braithwait kill ended the tightest set of the match.
Set 3
-A back-and-forth start to the final game opened up with the Jets' nine-point run, and after a pair of DBU points, Harvey put up three kills and Turner two to key a six-point jaunt that made the score 17-6.
-Kills from Braithwait and Braddy helped extend the lead to 23-11, and after two more DBU points, back-to-back errors by the guests wrapped up the Newman victory.

-The Jets hit .241 for the match, led by Harvey's 11 kills on 24 swings with just one error for a .417 percentage.
-Turner turned in 10 assists as a secondary setter, adding to her eight kills and eight digs.
