Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Jets Fall In Tight Game To No. 14 St. Edward's

AUSTIN, Texas — Another impressive defensive performance by the Newman women's soccer team wasn't quite enough to get by No. 14 St. Edward's in a 1-0 defeat in Heartland Conference action Thursday afternoon.

KEY SEQUENCE

The Jets (4-5-4, 3-4-2, 11 pts Heartland) held the Hilltoppers (9-1-1, 8-0-1, 25 pts Heartland) to minimal chances throughout the game, but the hosts were able to take advantage of one, as a soft shot by India Wentz in the 68th minute slipped in the goal and provided the final cushion.

SCORING PLAYS

68'-SEU-India Wentz, assist Katie King. King got off a shot that was blocked by the Newman defense, but Wentz was there to finish the rebound.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Rosa Urista-Chico ripped off the Jets' first shot of the day in the 12th minute, forcing a save by St. Edward's keeper Lorrie Santoy. Minutes later, Newman's Kelsi Langley got in on the action in goal, stopping a Hilltopper shot.

-The Jets withstood a sustained rally from the hosts that saw three corners but just one shot. That came over a three-minute span with less than 15 minutes remaining in the opening half, and Langley came up with the save on SEU's lone shot.

-Erin Mink took a crack at goal with less than a minute to play, but it was also stopped by Santoy to leave the game scoreless at the break.

-Three shots from the Hilltoppers game in the first 15 minutes of the second half, with Langley grabbing a pair of saves and the back line blocking another. After Newman got one of its most dangerous chances, but was whistled for offsides, St. Edward's was able to score its goal.

-Urista-Chico unleashed another shot a minute after the goal, but Santoy again prevented the goal. The hosts only managed one more shot in the game, but Newman's final attempt to tie it, a shot from Morgan Foster in the 86th, was blocked.

NOTES

-The Jets held the Hilltoppers to just 10 shots for the game, SEU's second-lowest total of the year after being held to seven against Dallas Baptist.

-It's the 11th time in 13 games that the Jets have allowed one or fewer goals in a game.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Jets head to Dallas Baptist for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Patriots Saturday.
