Jets Climb Past The Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. – After four toughly contested matches in conference play that resulted in either a loss or a tie, the Newman men's soccer team found themselves back in the win column after beating Rogers State 1-0 this afternoon.
 
KEY SEQUENCE
 
The Jets (7-5-2, 5-3-2 Heartland) found themselves in a golden opportunity in the 25' minute of the match, when a Hillcat (6-5-3, 3-5-2 Heartland) defender fouled a Newman player in the box. Luca Anelli took the penalty shot for the Jets and buried it past the Rogers State goalkeeper for the only goal of the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
-Newman would fire away in the first half, shooting 10 shots to Rogers State's five.
 
-The biggest moment of the game happened in the 25' minute when a Rogers State defender took down a Newman player in the box, which resulted in a game winning penalty kick from Luca Anelli.
 
-Blake Andrews recorded two of this three saves in the first half of play this afternoon. The Newman defenders were very active in the first half only allowing five shots.
 
-The Jets wouldn't get as many opportunities to score in the second half as they did in the first, only shooting three times.
 
-The best two chances for the Jets to extend their lead came in the 75' and 77' minutes. A shot from Anelli in the 75' minute was denied by the Rogers State goalkeeper and in the 77' minute a shot from Ed Jabbari was also robbed by the Hillcat goalkeeper to keep the score at 1-0.
 
-The Hillcats got after the Newman defenders a bit more in the second half shooting six shots. The only shot that was relatively close came in the 86' minute when a header from a Hillcat player ended up in the hands of Andrews.
 
NOTES
 
-Newman outshot Rogers State 13-11 this afternoon.
 
-Rogers State had nine corner kicks to Newman's one.
