WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman men's soccer team was able to outlast St. Mary's in a very physical 3-1 match at Wilkins Field that saw three red and yellow cards this evening.
KEY SEQUENCE
After scores by both teams in the first 11 minutes of the match, the Jets (8-5-2, 6-3-2 Heartland) were able to break the tie in the 16' minute from a laser shot from
Carlos Rubio Garcia and eventual get an insurance goal late in the 81' minute to claim a 3-1 victory over the Rattlers (5-7-2, 4-6-1 Heartland).

-11'-STMU-Patricio Botello Faz, unassisted. Got his own rebounded shot that was blocked by a defender and then put up another shot past the goalie into the middle of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Jets scored on their very first shot of the evening, when Anelli took on two defenders and placed the ball perfectly into the bottom left corner of the net to go up 1-0 in the 9' minute.
-St. Mary's would answer right back with a goal of its own in the 11' minute to tie things up at 1-1.
-Newman would reclaim the lead in the 16' when
Carlos Rubio Garcia buried a shot into the top right corner of the net to put the Jets up 2-1.
-
Blake Andrews would record his only save of the first half in the 42' minute.
-Both teams were almost equal in their shot totals in the first half with Newman shooting five and St. Mary's with four.
-The Jets and the Rattlers both fired five shots in the second half. Andrews recorded two more saves in the second half to have a total of three saves for the night.
-A goal from Okamoto in the 81' would seal the deal for the Jets and walk away with a 3-1 victory over St. Mary's.
NOTES
-The Jets were whistled for 13 fouls along with one red card and two yellow cards. St. Mary's was called for 13 fouls as well but with two red cards and one yellow card.
-Anelli has found his scoring touch once again, scoring in each of the past three games for the Jets.
-Newman is back on a winning streak in Heartland Conference play, now at two in a row after Saturday's 1-0 win over Rogers State. With the victory, the Jets helped close in on a top-four finish in the league, as they have a six-point edge on teams tied for fifth with just three games to play.
