Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Jets Seal Postseason Bid With Win Over TAMIU

WICHITA, Kan. — After a long 88 minutes of limited opportunities for both sides, a free kick in the 89th minute resulted in the lone goal of the game, giving the Newman men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at Wilkins Field.

KEY SEQUENCE

In a game that saw only 12 total shots between the two teams, the Jets (9-5-2, 7-3-2, 23 pts Heartland) saw Vitor Okamoto line up over a free kick about 30 yards out with just over 60 seconds left to play against the Dustdevils (5-10-0, 4-8-0, 12 pts Heartland). His rocket of a shot glanced off the right side of the TAMIU wall, giving it just enough room to slip past the goalkeeper inside the right post and give the Jets the victory.

SCORING PLAYS

89'-NU-Vitor Okamoto, unassisted. Taking a crack at a restart as from the right side, Okamoto's shot deflected off a defender and past the TAMIU keeper.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-A quiet first few minutes of the game opened up quickly with a flurry of action from the Jets. The hosts got their best chance of the game until their goal when Ed Jabbari lofted a cross from the right side and Jamie Barkway headed it into the box. Vince Couto got a shot off that got past the keeper, but a TAMIU defender saved the ball off the line.

-Jabbari followed that up with a shot from the top of the box that forced a save, with both opportunities coming in the eighth minute.

-Michael Iskander, who ended up being the biggest threat of the game for the Dustdevils, unleashed a shot from just inside the box that sailed high in the 23rd minute, and five minutes later, he got off a quick shot that saw Newman keeper Blake Andrews have to lunge to make a nice save.

-The final 18 minutes of the first half were played without a shot, but Iskander struck again in the 48th, as a two-on-one ended up with him behind Andrews, but Iskander's shot glanced off the post and skipped away from danger.

-Bernardo Vilas Boas took a shot from just inside the box in the 57th that got through the defense but slid just wide. Iskander followed that up with yet another shot that hit the post to keep things scoreless in the 74th.

-A foul-filled final 10 minutes kept either team from gaining momentum, but one of those fouls worked to the Jets favor, when Tommy Fiszel was pulled down about five yards out of the box, setting up Okamoto's free kick to win it.

NOTES

-The Dustdevils outshot the Jets 7-5 in the game, but Newman held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. TAMIU was whistled for offsides five times, but only one appeared destined for a dangerous chance.

-With the victory, Newman locked up a spot in the Heartland Conference postseason for the third year in a row, and appears likely to end up in fourth place, which would mean hosting a quarterfinal game at Wilkins Field on Nov. 1 in the league's new postseason format.
